Okaiken's direct investment into Bergenstein's local currencies tops 15 Billion En since 2008
OKASHI, July 21 (CDS) -- Sanese have directly invested over 15 billion en in Bergenstein's local currencies over the past five years for tax evasion, a lawmaker said Sunday, citing government data.
Rep. Yukio Takamura of the main opposition Democratic Party, releasing data obtained from the National Tax Service, the Okaiken Customs Service and other government agencies, said Sanese individuals and enterprises funneled 14.98 billion en in direct investment into a number of local currencies in Bergenstein..
The five-year direct investment of over 15 billion en accounted for 8 percent of their entire overseas investment of $98 billion en in the same period, the data showed.
Large conglomerates accounted for 78 percent of the local currency direct investment.
The authorities should closely monitor whether the growing direct investments into overseas local currencies are related to wealth flight," said an official close to Rep. Takamura.
A tax official in Okaiken said direct investments into local currencies cannot always be seen as related to wealth flight, but is a way for evading Okaiken's taxation. The authorities will further strengthen oversight of overseas capital flows.
Earlier this month, a parliamentary report found that Sanese have sent more than 5 billion Sent overseas, including to Bergenstein's local currency market, in the last five years.
A lawmaker who requested the ISM for such data called on regulatory authorities to step up efforts in keeping closer tabs on the movement of funds based in tax havens, since they may be involved in possible tax dodging.
The money was mostly wired to three tax havens: Bergenstein, the San Jose Islands and Nuevo Principio, the report said.
The amount of money transferred to tax havens has been on the rise, more than doubling to 1.37 billion Sent as of end-2012 from 556 million Sent in 2009.
The Government has stepped up to crack down on tax evasion, but it has reminded Bergenstein that it is their fiduciary responsibility.
