The gas died and they tried to refire it with the match but it didn't work, so the balloon was going down and they needed to lose ballast so they threw away all their clothes but it wasn't enough so he sacrificed himself as ballast to save the other two?

He was the one trying to light the match and it was broken because it Broke when he struck it to light it (it's thin wood after all). He was still holding it because he had to jump ship that quick.

The cause of the man's death was this: Three people were in a balloon trying to cross Althena.
