DAY 3 HEADLINE: FEDERATION APOLOGIZES OVER FENCING DEBACLE
OKASHI-Fencing’s governing body is offering Szchenese Lee Myu-Jong a special sportsmanship award following her controversial elimination on Monday.
A day after a weeping Lee staged a one-hour protest and had to be escorted off the fencing strip following her semifinal loss to Follvirkeland’s Britta Sigmarsson, Szchenese AG Committee president Park Yong-sung said the federation recognized there were issues with time keeping and apologized.
“They never expected this kind of thing to happen in the last second, three attacks. Their time keeping machine is only in seconds, not (tenths) of a second,” Park said. “Because of this, they could not handle the situation correctly. That they admit.”
The row erupted when two double-touches were recorded with a second left and Shin thought she had won.
After some discussion, one second was added, giving Sigmarsson a chance to surge forward and hit Shin with the winning point.
