Untitled 1Reform Talks on Lifting Ban on Socialist Party
Acadia has had a ban on the Socialist and Communist parties
since the end of the GAW, but some want to change that. They say that it
is a violation of the constitution, and just non-democratic to ban a specific
party from the government. Some defenders, however, say that the ban is
valid because it is a measure to protect national security, and that socialism
is an un-Acadian value. President Matt Randall has not commented.
Folland and the Sents
Folland's possibility of joining Acadia and Shayden in using the Sents has
captured quite a lot of attention. Several welcome Folland into the group.
Some disagree.
"Before we can trust Folland by putting our financial
security in potential jeopardy, we must be sure that Folland's financial status
is stable," says President Matt Randall (Conservative).
Adopting Shayden's Approval Method
Acadia's current but out-dated system of voting assigns a certain number of
votes to each state, based on their population. Shayden does it a little
differently. Their system has three options for each candidate on the
ballot; Approve (+1), No Option (0), or Disapprove (-1). This method would
be more democratic and better represent the people, and eliminates the problem
of minority approval.
Analysts suggest that it is unlikely for 3/4 of
the state legislatures to approve of such an amendment, so an initiative (The
right of citizens outside the legislature to originate legislation) will be
required.
Others say the opposite, that if a politician votes against the
amendment, it will simply make them look bad.
Fraesian War Debt Officially Paid Off
Acadia had briefly accumulated a war debt from the Fraesian War. This
was the first time that Acadia has been in debt since 1987. President Matt
Randall guaranteed in his campaign that he would enact a plan to pay off the
debt and end former President Johnson's excessive spending. Randall
announced on national television today that all debt has been formally paid off,
and that his spending plan will continue to provide more cash flow.
