Euthanasia legalised nation-wide
A controversial bill "right-to-die" has been passed in the capital today, leading to the legalization of euthanasia for the elderly and terminally-ill. The law passed with a large majority of 81-16 with 7 abstaining. There is no age-restrictions for this law meaning minors will be eligible for 'treatment' if they are seen to be mature enough to make their own decisions.
A social media opinion poll has shown that around 87% of Septentrians support the move by the Köhler Government.
"This is a huge step forward of pro-choice in Septentria" one comment said in response to the poll.
"This is not about lethal injections for our citizens, this is about the terminally ill and elderly, whose death is imminent and who suffer greatly," said Richard Friedrich, from the Septentrian Labor Party who back the law. "There are clear checks and balances in the law to prevent abuse," he said.
The most controversial area of the bill is allowing terminally-ill children being included, but Friedrich insisted that "children seeking to end their lives must be "capable of discernment", the law says, and psychologists must test them to confirm they understand what they are doing. Parents must also approve of their child's decision."
Those who opposed included Dominik Jürgen, from the opposition party stated: "People are getting used to this idea of euthanasia in order to say okay, well if I don't want to live anymore then I will ask for euthanasia. If I suffer the answer is euthanasia."
When asked if he was concerned that more children would make use of the law, Mr Jürgen said that supply creates demand.
"If you offer euthanasia then some parents might be tempted to act and to ask for euthanasia," he said.
"Also doctors, would they try to perform more and more in order to alleviate more and more the pain if they know if they are asked they can kill a child."
Jürgen was one of the 16 opposing the bill.
