History:
Kwangju was divided into three kingdoms (Bamgogae, Tangsŏn, and Kwanŭmdong) for much of its history, until they were unified into one empire under Emperor Wŏnsingi in 1902. Wŏnsingi oversaw the modernization of Kwangju's military, industry, and education. The rapid modernization of Kwangju allowed the empire to spread its trade influence throughout East Althena, which was seen as a threat by Mitoyagi. Kwangju was annexed by Mitoyagi in 1920 following the Sanese capture of Taejon. Mitoyagi's control of Kwangju was reaffirmed with the Kwangju-Sanese Annexation Treaty of 1920.
Kwangju was liberated from the Mitoyagi Empire on February 14, 1952, and was subsequently occupied by anti-Imperial forces until the end of the war. After Mitoyagi's surrender in October 1952 foreign troops began their withdrawal from the peninsula, and a new Interim government was established until a new republic was established. Communist parties within Kwangju who opposed the creation of a democratic government staged large scale protests and riots throughout the provisional capital, Taejon. Republican forces were ordered by the Interim president, Jeong Yoon, to begin "preemptive apprehension" of communist supporters. Hundreds of thousands were detained by the government, and forcibly moved to Dokdo Island, where they were executed. Despite efforts to stop the flow of information, news of the massacre spread quickly leading to larger communist uprisings. The Worker's Party of Kwangju was established by communist leader Myung Yu on February 2, 1953, who declared the creation of the Democratic People's Republic of Kwangju. Fighting between the Communist and Republican factions nearly escalated into an all-out civil war, but Republican forces unilaterally withdrew from the Communist controlled areas by late 1953, in order to fight against separatist forces in the Seongpo Rebellion.
The government of Kwangju failed to crush the rebellion, giving rise to the Socialist Republic of Seongpo, on the eastern end of the Kwangju Peninsula. The President of Kwangju commited suicide on January 5, 1954, and the interim government of Kwangju collapsed. After the collapse of Kwangju, the Republic of Howan was founded, under the leadership of Lee Sung Ki. Under his leadership, Howan adopted a strict anti-communist position, and aggressive economic policies. Relations between Howan and Seongpo greaty improved, as both had a common mistrust of the Kwangju DPR.
Amid reconciliation negotiations, Howan, the Kwangju DPR, and Seongpo joined the USN on August 17, 1978, aimed at reducing tensions on the Kwangju Peninsula. However, the Kwangju DPR tested its first nuclear weapon in early 1979, drawing condemnation and sanctions from the international community. Howan and Seongpo then withdrew from the NNPT, and started their own joint nuclear program, and severed relations with the DPRK. Tensions peaked when several soldiers from the from the DPRK attacked border posts on Howan's side of the DMZ, killing dozens, and injuring hundreds more. The following day the Seongponese island Myeong was shelled, killing thirteen. Clashes between the two sides continued well into 1979, but a declaration of war was never issued by either side. Tensions were defused with the death of Myung Yu, and the end of communist incursions into Howan territory. A unnerving stalemate between Howan/Seongpo and the Kwangju DPR soon emerged on the Kwangju Peninsula throughout much of the 80s and 90s.
Following unification negotiations mediated by Okaiken, between Howan, the Kwangju DPR, and Seongpo, a final agreement had been reached. A new constitution was approved by the three governments on April 29th, and the Republic of Kwangju was officially established on June 19, 2013. Kwangju has since superseded Howan in the USN, and has become one of the largest economies on Adonia.
