Kariko negotiations begin in Torshia with tension between Samuelé and DiogenesCalibria and Sinope's delegations facing each other in the negotiation room in Torshia
By Nikodemos Pavlos BarisTORSHIA - The Kariko negotiations started this morning in Torshia, where the Doge of Sinope, Diogenes, has attended along with the interim President of the Kariko Republic, Stylianos Metaxas, and
Lord* Mihalis Kokinos. On the other side are the Calibrian delegation, composed of Chancellor Samuelé, the Calibrian Minister of Foreign Affairs Laurentius Antonescu, and the Carico Autonomous Territory Prime Minister, Quintilianus Ionescu.
Surprisingly, both sides agreed for a direct face-to-face meeting, which is rare in diplomatic negotiation circumstances. The opening day of the negotiations was still tense, as both parties didn't reach any agreement, and talks were marked by bitter exchanges. Calibrian Foreign Minister Laurentius Antonescu, speaking after the tense opening day of a negotiation conference that has nearly fallen apart at every step, said his government's priority was to "to ensure the territorial integrity of Calibria." He said, "This paves the way for the start of the political process and a dialogue without any military intervention."
Stylianos Metaxas, a longtime opponent of Ionescu's rule who spent many years in Calibrian prisons, said it was "not easy" to sit in the same room with Calibrian officials at Tuesday's opening of the negotiation conference. "I looked at them and thought, it's our victory. After almost a century of struggle, we've finally managed to start new negotiations, it's a huge step." he declared.
The talks ended with very tense exchanges between Doge Diogenes and Chancellor Samuelé, wheras the latter accused Diogenes of wanting the annexation of Kariko into Sinope. "It's clear Sinope wants Enosis. What will it be next, Diogenes? Matinenda?" asked an emotional Samuelé to a calm Diogenes. "The best solution is to organize a free and fair election in the Kariko Republic" and once the ballots are cast "we should all accept" the outcome, Diogenes said. "Should the Kariko-Sinopian population want to become part of Sinope, I'll be willing to accept their decision. It is their right under international law after all."
High-level mediating has yielded little so far, but Ionescu said the two sides might be willing to bend on humanitarian aid, cease-fires and prisoner exchanges. The main Calibrian opposition leader, Lucretia Ardelean, said they should "partition Carico with ethnic lines. That's the only way to permanently solve the conflict and establish good relations with Sinope."
