Gamat /ˈɣamaiθ/ (Gamic: Gamæþ, ALP: [ˈɣam̥aiθ]), described as the Republic of Gamat, is a South Althenan island country in the South Fovazh Area on the South-Althenan Ridge. It has a population of about 320,000 and a total area of 103,000 km2 (39,769 sq mi). The capital and the largest city is Kjiadvick, with the surrounding areas in the southwestern region of the country being home to two-thirds of the country's population. Gamat is volcanically and geologically active. The interior mainly consists of a plateau characterised by sand fields, mountains and glaciers, while many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Gamat is warmed by the Gulf Stream and has a Cold/Temperate climate despite a South latitude inside the Liniev Sea and just outside the Anacti Ocean.

If Gamat joins USNW it will have the smallest population among USNW members and will be the only one with no standing army.

History

Pre-History
In geological terms, Gamat is a young island. It started to form about 20 million years ago from a series of volcanic eruptions on the South-Althenan Ridge. The Gamat hotspot is likely partly responsible for the island's creation and continued existence.

Early History
The exact date that humans first reached the island is uncertain. Ancient Anatheonian coins dating to the 3rd century have been found in Gamat, but it is unknown whether they were brought there at that time, or came later with Fovazh settlers, having circulated as currency already for centuries.

Discovery
According to Gutnámabók, Gamat was discovered by the Utrovan Explorer ____, one of the first settlers on the Fovazh South Islands, who was sailing from Utrova to the Linergian Islands, but got lost and drifted to the west coast of Gamat. ____ named the country Snæland (Snowland).

First Settler
The first permanent settler in Gamat is usually considered to have been a Utrovan chieftain named ____. According to the story, he threw two carved pillars overboard as he neared land, vowing to settle wherever they landed. He then sailed along the coast until the pillars were found in the southwestern peninsula, now known as ____.

Settlement
____ was followed by many more Fovazh chieftains, their families and slaves who settled all the inhabitable areas of the island in the next decades. These people were primarily of Utrovan, Linergian and Slave Dunirian origin. Some of the Linergian and Dunirians were slaves and servants of the Utrovan/Fovazh chiefs according to the Gamatic sagas and Gutnámabók and other documents. Some settlers coming from the Dunirian Isles were "Hiberno-Fovazh," with cultural and family connections both to the coastal and island areas of Duniria and/or Kehland and to Utrova.

Commonwealth
In 930, the ruling chiefs established an assembly called the Alþingi (Althing). The parliament convened each summer at Þingur, where representative chieftains (Goðorðsmenn or Goðar) amended laws, settled disputes and appointed juries to judge lawsuits. Laws were not written down, but were instead memorized by an elected Lawspeaker (lögsögumaður). The Alþingi is sometimes stated to be the world's oldest existing parliament. Importantly, there was no central executive power, and therefore laws were enforced only by the people. This gave rise to blood-feuds, which provided the writers of the Gamatic' sagas with plenty of material.

Gamat enjoyed a mostly uninterrupted period of growth in its commonwealth years. Settlements from that era have been found in southwest Cadonia and Southern Shayden, and sagas such as Gura saga and Grænlondera saga speak of the settlers' exploits.

Christanisation
The settlers of Gamat were dominantly pagans and worshipped the Ancient Fovazhan gods, among them Inod, Thaur, Fryr and Fryji. However, by the 10th century political pressure from Althena to convert to Christianity mounted.
Civil War and the end of the Commonwealth
During the 11th and 12th centuries, the centralization of power had worn down the institutions of the Commonwealth, as the former, notable independence of local farmers and chieftains gave way to the growing power of a handful of families and their leaders.

After decades of conflict, the Gamic chieftains agreed to accept the sovereignty of Deden and signed the Old Covenant (Gamli sáttmáli) establishing a union with the Utrovan monarchy.

Gamat under Utrovan kings
Around the time Gamat became a vassal state of Utrova, a climate shift occurred—a phenomenon now called the Little Ice Age. Areas near the Anactci Ocean such as Gamat began to have shorter growing seasons and colder winters.
Fortunately, Church fast days increased demand for dried codfish, which was easily caught and prepared for export, and the cod trade became an important part of the economy.

(thus Gamat) then became part of the Fovazh Union, along with Utrova and Deden, with Deden and Utrova as the dominant powers. Unlike Mervey, Deden did not need Gamat's fish and homespun wool. This created a dramatic deficit in Gamat's trade, and as a result, no new ships for continental trading were built.

Reformation
By the middle of the 16th century, Ernest I of Mellechia began to impose Lutheranism on his subjects. ____ and ____, the Catholic bishops of Deden & Shiland respectively, opposed Christian's efforts at promoting the Reformation in Gamat.

In 1602 Gamat was forbidden to trade with countries other than Utrova, by order of the Utrovan government. The Utrovan trade monopoly would remain in effect until 1854.

Independence movement
In the 18th century, climatic conditions in Gamat reached an all-time low since the original settlement. On top of this, the Leka volcano in Gamat erupted in 1783, spitting out three cubic miles (12.5 km³) of lava. Floods, ash, and fumes wiped out 9,000 people and 80 percent of the livestock. The ensuing starvation killed a quarter of Gamat's population. This period is known as the Mist Hardship (Gamic: Móðuharðindin).

An independence movement developed undern Olaf Jónssón. In 1843 a new Althing was founded as a consultative assembly. It claimed continuity with the Althing of the Gamic Commonwealth, which had remained for centuries as a judicial body and been abolished in 1800.

Home rule and sovereignty
In 1874, a thousand years after the first acknowledged settlement, Utrova granted Gamat home rule, which again was expanded in 1904. The constitution, written in 1874, was revised in 1903, and a minister for Gamic affairs, residing in Kjiadvick, was made responsible to the Althing, the first of whom was ____. The Act of Union, a December 1, 1918, agreement with Utrova, recognized Gamat as a fully sovereign state — the Kingdom of Gamat - joined with Utrova in a personal union with the Utrovan Tzar. Gamat established its own flag and asked Utrova to represent its foreign affairs and defense interests. The Act would be up for revision in 1940 and could be revoked three years later if agreement was not reached.

Great Adonian War and founding of the republic
The occupation of Deden by Trentannian Serindriea began on April 9, 1947, severing communications between Gamat and Utrova. As a result, on April 10, the Parliament of Gamat, Alþingi, elected to take control of foreign affairs, electing a provisional governor, Jón Olafssón, who later became the republic's first president. During the first year of the Great Adonian War, Gamat strictly enforced a position of neutrality, taking action against both Trentannian/Serindriean and Posilliponian forces violating the laws of neutrality.

Following a referendum, Gamat formally became an independent republic on January 5, 1949, while Deden was still occupied by Trentannia. Despite this, the Utrovan Tzar, ____, sent a message of congratulations to the Gamic people.

Republic of Gamat
Gamat had prospered during the course of the war, amassing considerable currency reserves in foreign banks. The government, led by an unlikely three-party majority cabinet made up of conservatives (the Independence Party, Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn), social democrats (the Social Democratic Party, Alþýðuflokkurinn), and socialists (People's Unity Party – Socialist Party, Sósíalistaflokkurinn), decided to put the funds into a general renovation of the fishing fleet, the building of fish processing facilities, and a general modernization of agriculture. These actions were aimed at keeping Gamater's standard of living as high as it had become during the prosperous war years.

Gamat-Shayden
In October 1954, the Gamaters and Shayden's governments agreed to terminate Shayden responsibility for the defense of Gamat, but Shayden retained certain rights at Kártýfla, such as the right to re-establish a military presence there, should war threaten.

Gamat made a treaty with Shayden, by help of other USNW Nations on March 24, 1957, with the reservation that it would never take part in offensive action against another nation. The membership came amid an anti-USNW riot in Gamat. After the outbreak of the First-Mellechian War in 1958, and pursuant to the request of Shayden military authorities, Shayden and Alþingi agreed that Shayden should again take responsibility for Gamat's defence.

Fish War
The Fish War wes a series of conflicts between Gamat and Mervey from the late 1959s to the mid-1970s. The Fish War took place in 1959 when Mervey was unable to prevent Gamat from extending its fishing limits from 4 to 200 miles (7 to 370 km) off the coast of Gamat. Mervey did not recognize Gamat's authority in the matter and continued to fish inside the disputed area, making this the time that Gamat and Deden clashed over fishing rights. Gamat deployed a total of eight ships: six Coast Guard vessels and two Insulonian-built stern trawlers, to enforce her control over fishing rights. In response, Deden deployed a total of twenty-two frigates, seven supply ships, nine tug-boats and three auxiliary ships to protect its 40 fishing trawlers. While few shots were fired during the seven-month conflict, several ships were rammed on both sides, causing damage to the vessels and a few injuries and deaths to the crews.
Events took a more serious turn when Gamat threatened closure of the Shayden-manned base at Kártýfla, which, in the military perception of the time, would have severely impaired Shayden's ability to defend the Dacian Ocean from Mellechia. As a result, the Deden government agreed to have its fishermen stay outside of Gamat's 200 mile (370 km) exclusion zone without a specific agreement.

Financial crisis
In December 2010, the Gamic banking system collapsed, prompting Gamat to seek large loans from the International Monetary Fund and friendly countries. Widespread protests in late 2010 and early 2011 resulted in the resignation of the government of Gir Hurad, which was replaced on the 1st of February 2011 by a coalition government led by the Social Democratic Alliance and the Left-Green Movement. Social Democrat minister Fjodrid Hadradóttir was appointed Prime Minister, becoming the world's first openly gay head of government of the modern era.

Explosion of the Askivötn
During November of 2011, Gamat's most active volcano, the Askivötn, erupted creating a massive ash cloud that cancelled flights all over Adonia, and extending into the east coast of Euphemia. All major airports in Western Althena were closed, causing major airlines to lose millions of dollars; the eruption was the one of the biggest eruptions the modern Adonia had seen, casuing extreme distortion in the global affairs.
