Traditionalists Regain Control in Bergenstein Elections
Coalition Leaders Concerned About Return to Monarchy

VILLORA

International hopes for a long-term democratic government in the state of Bergenstein took a major blow this week after the candidate from the traditionalist Wiez Party, Ludwig Schmittegstein, was elected as Chancellor in the first elections since the a Western Althenan Coalition spearheaded by Sinope, of which Insulo is a member, intervened in the county in order to bring an end to a deadly civil war. Immediately after being announced as the new Chancellor, Schmittegstein spoke of his intention to restore the monarchy of High King Gottenburg, a move which will mark the end of the exceptionally short-lived Bergen Republic that was created in the wake of the civil war.

Leaders of prominent coalition nations have not minced words in their expressions of disapproval toward Mr. Schmittegstein's election. Diogenes, the Doge of Sinope, was succinct in his remarks, stating that the population of Bergenstein "has made the wrong choice." Chancellor Austerlitz of the Brüllen Federation had harsher words about the decision, expressing his view that "Bergenstein will find itself facing a very dark future." The President of Insulo, Gisela Batista Mota, issued a statement on the matter Sunday Morning. She denounced the election of Mr. Schmittegstein, saying that "the Bergen people, to my utter disbelief, have chosen to turn back in the same direction that led them into their recent calamity." She claimed that the her government "will continue to work toward a democratic Bergenstein and a stable Western Althenan community, but we have major concerns that the leadership of the Wiez Party will not be willing to work with us in our pursuit of these goals."

Their were some positives, however, from the perspective of the Coalition. The new Chancellor announced plans to introduce a new national currency, a major step toward an economically unified Bergenstein after the country's numerous regional currencies led to economic disaster in the lead-up to the civil war. Some experts on the situation in Bergenstein have claimed this new policy and the influence in Mr. Schmittegstein's remarks on a limited amount of autonomy for the various Bergen states indicates that the new government is at the very least committed to rectifying the extreme regional divisions that are present in Bergen Society, divisions which formerly were only deepened by the structure of the Bergen government.
President Batista Mota remarked that "these efforts to bring together the various peoples of Bergenstein provide a glimmer of hope for the future." These indications of an emphasis on economic and cultural unity may have had some influence on the reactions of Coalition nations, which despite the critical remarks have yet to announce any major alterations in their policies concerning the situation in Bergenstein.

Insulo Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage Nationwide
Comprehensive Human Rights Law Includes Anti-Discrimination Measures

VILLORA

The "Human Rights Reform Bill" that was introduced in Parliament last September has today been signed into law my Insulonian President Gisela Batista Mota. The comprehensive new law, among other things, will make same-sex marriage completely legal in all of Insulo. Previously, only several provinces had laws legalizing same sex marriage. Additionally, the law makes discrimination against persons based on their sexual orientation illegal, giving it the same level of punishment as all other forms of discrimination in Insulo. The bill also includes provisions to give more options concerning gender on Insulonian census forms and gives people the right to legally change their gender listed on government documentation. This bill was the first of a series of new legislation proposed by the coalition between the President's Coalición Socialista and several other left-leaning parties to pass through parliament and be made law. Batista Mota released a statement after signing the bill, saying that "this brings us closer to our vision of Insulo as a modern, accepting society where no one feels unsafe because of who they are and where everyone has the same rights and opportunities." A large rally was held in support of the new law this afternoon in front of the presidential palace, but several smaller demonstrations were also held around Insulo in protest of the legislation.

Insulo Deploys More Troops to Bergenstein
Insulonian Troops to Reinforce Bruellan Positions

VILLORA

The Insulonian Senate has approved the deployment of additional troops to Bergenstein following the recent rash of violence in the Bruellan Occupation Zone, especially in the cities of Müllerheim and Kurtz. The additional Insulonian forces will reinforce Bruellan military positions in the area to try and restore order in the area. Official troop numbers have not been announced.

This decision by the Senate is yet another indication of the more firm stance of the Insulonian Government concerning the situation in Bergenstein, coming on the heels of the recent decision to sever all formal relation with the war-torn nation.
