History
The area within the borders of modern day Kaskaskia was originally populated by several native tribes, chiefly the Shawnee and Cahokia. They referred to the general region around the route of the Missoula river as Kaskaskia, which was adopted as the name for the modern state after a vote in 1868. The area then became part of Posillipo's Euphemian colony, but was primarily colonized by religious and social discontents seeking safe-haven from the nation of Trentannia. This cultural difference soon began to emerge as a unifying factor for the region, and in 1868 during a period of general disarray in the Posillpan Colonial System the landowners of Kaskaskia held a council and decided to declare themselves independent. After a brief bout of skirmishes with the colonial forces Posillipo signed a treaty with the colonists acknowledging their reign over the area. For many years, plantations and slavery were integral parts of the Kaskaskia society. Slavery was not outlawed in Kaskaskia until 1903. After independence a constitution was enacted that installed a representative government that was elected only by male landowners. There were several slave revolts in the late 1800's, but none succeeded in more than slightly inconveniencing the elite of Kaskaskia. In 1899, however, a large slave revolt occurred in western Kaskaskia which succeeded in gaining small farmers, abolitionists, and many foreign nationals as allies. The slave revolt slowly gained momentum, and in 1909 succeeded in capturing the capital city, Belleville. The government moved it's capital to Jonesboro, and continued fighting for two more years. On November 9th, 1911 the two sides agreed to the Treaty of Valencia, replacing the constitution with one that allowed all male citizens to vote and freed all slaves. There was resistance, especially in the east, to the enforcement of this new constitution. In eastern states many freed slaves were kept from voting through racist poll taxes and force. In 1924 the precedent of "Separate but Equal" was established by the Supreme Court and quickly became the norm in all but the most liberal western communities in the country. This continued be the status quo until a movement emerged in the 1960's to do away with the race based discrimination and ensure the rights of all Kaskasians. The movement fought for more than ten years until in 1977 the general assembly passed the Civil Rights Act, outlawing segregation and poll taxes, and creating stiff laws against racial discrimination. The process was slow, and was not without resistance. The governor of the state of Alexandria refused to desegregate Alexandrian schools, prompting the president to use federalize the police force in Alexandria and use the military to force their compliance with the act. The Kaskaskian Civil Rights Movement declared victory in 1982, four years after women were given the right to vote. Today Kaskasia is a modern nation in favor of universal rights for all peoples, though there is still some pockets of older sentiments in the eastern half of the country. The largest problems facing Kaskasia today are the repair and modernization of infrastructure, urban decay, and the economic crisis.
